The Saranac Lake Central School District board approved a temporary facility-use lease for the Franklin County Department of Social Services to operate at Saranac Lake High School.
District staff said Franklin County DSS began occupying space near the greenhouse area on a trial basis after their prior local office space became unavailable. The arrangement was described in the meeting record as a facilities use/short lease backdated to July 1, 2024, and running through Dec. 23, 2024, for $25 per day (finalized as $750 per month). "They have been here since July 1st ... this will be up in December; we'll do a new one," the staff member said.
Board members asked whether charging DSS this fee was equitable compared with other nonprofit partners that use district space without charge. Staff said some partners, such as JCEO's food shelf, are not charged because they provide services the district seeks; the district also noted custodial and overtime costs related to shared facility use.
The board recorded approval as Resolution 062 2024 by voice vote. The lease as described in the meeting will be replaced by a new agreement after December; staff said they expect to present a new lease document for longer-term use at a future meeting.
