Board approves MOA adding a head custodian role with $42,000 starting pay
Summary
The Saranac Lake Central School District board approved Resolution 061 2024 to add a head custodian classification to the negotiated unit, setting a $42,000 base salary for 2024–25 and $43,124 for 2025–26; the district said the change addresses unfilled senior-custodian positions and will fold into the unit's next contract talks.

The Saranac Lake Central School District board voted to approve a memorandum of agreement adding a head custodian position to the district's recognized bargaining-unit positions.
A staff member told the board the MOA is intended to address two senior-custodian lines the district has been unable to fill and that the head custodian would supervise custodial staff across the district. "We're not getting rid of them; we just haven't been able to fill those positions, so the hope is we'll be able to fill the head custodian position and they'll oversee the custodians throughout the district," the staff member said.
The MOA, recorded in the meeting as Resolution 061 2024, sets a starting base salary of $42,000 for the 2024-25 school year and $43,124 for 2025-26. Board members confirmed the district had discussed the change with the unit's president and the union's labor-relations specialist; staff reported the union helped draft the MOA and raised no objections.
Board members noted the agreement was discussed during the meeting's prior executive session and that the two-year salary table would be incorporated into formal contract negotiations when the unit's collective-bargaining agreement is renegotiated in 2026.
The board approved the resolution by voice vote with no recorded opposition. Next steps noted in the meeting record: the MOA will be filed with district personnel records and be included as part of the unit's contract negotiations scheduled when the unit's agreement expires at the end of the 2025-26 school year.
