Athens EDC hears development updates; Data Factory project remains on hold

At its Feb. 17 meeting the Athens Economic Development Corporation received a series of development updates from staff on private projects and recent outreach.
Alan Anderson, Director of Development, said Casey’s has cleared its site and will move to the under-construction list. He reported Ornelas Event Center’s plans have been approved. Anderson also said the Data Factory project is on hold while City Council and planning-and-zoning finalize definitions and ordinances that affect the proposal.
Community Development Manager Donna Meredith provided additional project updates. She said the contract for the Prengler property was canceled and earnest money was returned; she offered a Phase 2 environmental study from ETCOG but got no response. Meredith reported the Amended Performance Agreement with Athens Hotel Group has been fully executed and the developer expects to begin work in the fourth quarter. Meredith also said she was unable to schedule a meeting with LJA regarding Industrial Park financials but expects to present numbers at the next board meeting.
Meredith summarized takeaways from a Placer.ai training and asked board members to identify any specific data they would like staff to obtain. She noted that she, City Manager Elizabeth Borstad and Vice President Bryan Clemmons attended the MDM West conference; she shared a photo of the Oncor booth and attendance figures, and Borstad recommended more targeted planning and one-on-one meetings for future trade-show outreach.
No formal actions were taken on the projects discussed; staff will return with additional details at future meetings where needed.
