Camden County Commission hears mixed views on Wavy Leaf Road stop-sign request

At a second public hearing on April 2, the Camden County Commission heard competing views on a request to replace a stop sign with a yield sign at an intersection on Wavy Leaf Road.

Robert Fulstone and Jeff Winters, who spoke in opposition, said the intersection is dangerous and that the current stop sign helps slow traffic. Fulstone told the commission the intersection is hazardous and urged officials to keep the stop sign in place. Winters said, "the intersection is dangerous already and would be worse as development continues in that area." Both said enforcement presence affects driving behavior.

The requester, Gary Leu, a 15-year resident, argued a yield sign would better attract drivers' attention and reflected what many drivers already do. Leu said a yield sign "attracts the attention of drivers more than [a] Stop Sign" and added that "lots of people do not stop at the Stop Sign that's currently at the intersection now," arguing a yield sign would align the sign with observed behavior. Commissioner James Gohagan recalled a past fatality that prompted installation of the stop sign and asked whether there had been subsequent fatal crashes; Leu said he would have to research but did not believe there had been other fatality accidents.

Camden County Sheriff Edgar told the commission his office will continue saturation patrols on that road. Presiding Commissioner Ike Skelton reminded speakers that the commission would not make a decision at the April 2 meeting and that a final hearing is scheduled for Monday, April 6, 2026.

The commission took no formal action on the Wavy Leaf Road request at the April 2 session; the matter will return for the final hearing on April 6.
