Board accepts bid packages for Nathaniel Jones Early Learning Center expansion; project reported under hard-cost budget

He said the project was estimated initially at north of $25 million in hard construction costs and that, after receiving bids, the district is about $1.2 million under its hard-cost target with an anticipated total near $26 million. Gruber told trustees he expects equipment on-site May 22, site demolition to take roughly two weeks and an overall opening target of January 2028.
Board members asked about change orders and contingencies; Gruber said the district completed core sampling, has included a contingency line item in the project budget to address unforeseen subsurface issues, and does not anticipate many change orders unless unexpected ground conditions are encountered.
The board considered combined action items to accept the NJ ELC expansion bid packages (16 bid packages, a little over $16 million in the package total, per the presentation) and to seek bids for paving projects at Fishback Creek and Snacks Crossing; motions and seconds were recorded and the board approved the motions by voice vote.
The acceptance of bids moves the project into contracting and site work phases; the presentation and the board discussion emphasized schedule, safety features and budget contingency planning.
