Young County commissioners discussed an emergency item May 11 after AT&T informed the county it plans to discontinue copper-based phone service on Aug. 1. The outage earlier in the week had left the courthouse without reliable phone service for several days until a temporary fix.
Staff reported that the county’s copper lines could not be repaired in the long term and recommended a move to voice-over-internet (VoIP) telephony now that reliable internet service is available at the courthouse. Commissioners asked for options and asked staff and outside IT consultants to return recommendations within a 90-day window. No contract or final procurement decision was made at the meeting.
Why it matters: The courthouse phone system is a primary public contact point; commissioners said restoring reliable phone service and selecting a long-term solution are priorities before the carrier discontinues service.
Next steps: County staff (IT and administration) will evaluate vendor options, cost and implementation steps and report back to the court.
