Madison authorizes contract addendum to allow sale of renewable energy credits

The Madison City Commission authorized an addendum to the city's contract with the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) to permit sales of renewable energy credits (RECs) the city receives through WAPA.
Jameson said the city currently cannot sell RECs under the existing WAPA contract and that the addendum would allow the city to sell them if it chooses. "We're estimating the value of our RECs to be around $50 to $60,000," he said. He added that the city's RECs are primarily hydro credits and that Heartland Energy would manage REC tracking in the registry system (EMTRS) at no cost to the city.
Staff emphasized the city would not be required to sell credits even after the addendum and that any actual sale would return to the commission for separate authorization. The commission voted by voice to authorize the mayor to sign the addendum.
