Sarah Attig, a health and family educator with the University of Illinois Extension, asked McLean County Board members to help promote a dementia‑friendly Bloomington‑Normal initiative and complete a community survey that closes June 15. Attig said the task force, formed after an initial March meeting, brings together caregivers, businesses and community organizations to increase awareness and reduce stigma about dementia and to inform education and training.
"Communities that take proactive steps now to build awareness and supportive systems are better prepared to meet these challenges," Attig told the board, urging members to share the survey with residents, businesses and partners. She said the task force launched a brief survey to assess current knowledge and perceptions and that results will guide training and outreach.
Attig noted an upcoming community mental health field day on May 30 at Norma Dee Village and left postcards with QR codes and an extension impact report for board members. The presentation was part of the public‑comment period; Attig said the task force hopes county participation will help reach a broader set of residents and strengthen momentum for the initiative.
The board took no formal action on the request during the meeting; Attig said she looked forward to working with county staff and community partners as planning continues.
