Commission authorizes chair to sign joint election agreements under state law

Lincoln County Auditor Sher L. presented joint election agreements to implement coordination required under last year’s SB 1130. The agreements align political subdivisions—cities and school districts—to hold certain elections on county ballots for the June primary or the November general, and they specify cost‑sharing for ballot programming, poll workers and other election administration tasks.
Sher explained that the agreements detail the parties’ responsibilities and how incremental costs will be shared when jurisdictions combine elections on the county ballot. The packet shown to commissioners included agreements for Canton, Alcester, Harrisburg School, Lennox School and others; Centerville’s agreement was listed as pending return.
Commission action: The commission moved and seconded authorization for the chair to execute the listed joint election agreements. A roll call vote approved the authorization; commissioners Putnham, Schmidt, Uton, Arens and Landine voted yes.
Why it matters: Combined elections lengthen ballots and require programming and poll staffing adjustments, but they reduce separate administration costs for smaller jurisdictions; the agreements allocate incremental costs to the jurisdictions that request combined ballots.
