Select Board approves Memorial Day parade, one-day alcohol permits and appointments; opens special town meeting warrant

The Southampton Select Board on May 12 approved multiple routine items on its agenda, including authorization for the Memorial Day parade, one-day beer-and-wine permits for park events, several committee reappointments and new election worker appointments, and the opening of the warrant for a June 20 special town meeting.
The board authorized the Memorial Day parade to take place May 25 with a 9:00 a.m. start at the school and empowered the police chief to close streets as needed for public-safety purposes. The motion passed by voice vote.
The board also approved three one-day beer-and-wine permits for events at Conant Park: a Yankee Candle picnic (May 21), a private graduation celebration (June 7), and the Celebrate Southampton festival on Aug. 15. Tammy Wunis, president of the Southampton Historical Society, told the board Celebrate Southampton will be a full-day event with a "memory hour," live guests and roughly 25 craft vendors; she asked local clubs and committees to reserve booths.
The board reaffirmed a slate of reappointments to the grant search committee and building-department inspector roles, approved new election worker appointments and accepted two resignations from the Conservation Commission effective May 5, 2026. Select Board members urged residents with relevant experience to consider applying to fill the conservation vacancies.
On election business the board signed the warrant for the May 19 annual town election (12 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the senior center) and confirmed the procedural requirement that constables post the warrant at least seven days before the election. The board opened the warrant for a special town meeting on June 20 and set a deadline for submission of articles on June 2 to allow time for staff review and warrant posting.

The board also approved minutes from March 26 and 31 and accepted payroll and vendor warrant reports presented during the meeting. The Select Board adjourned at approximately 6:45 p.m.
