Students from Latinx club present cultural programming and volunteer work to board

Members of the high-school Latinx club presented to the Coos Bay SD 9 school board on May 11 to introduce their organization, outline volunteer activities and ask the board to note the club’s role in the school community.
"We want to introduce our club and tell you guys why it should matter to you," said Yelia Mendez, a junior, speaking for the club as she and fellow students explained that meetings combine games, food and lessons about Hispanic traditions. Presenters — who identified themselves as juniors and sophomores — listed recurring events including Read Across America volunteer work, family fun day activities, a Day of the Dead commemoration and collaboration with local groups for gift-wrapping at the holidays.
The students said average attendance was roughly 17 participants, with a high meeting attendance of 26 and approximately 470 total volunteer hours in the school year. They named advisers Roman Munoz, Jennifer Torres, Melinda Torres and Ann Rodriguez and said they have partnered with local organizations including KUS Hispanic Allies and the Coos Bay Community Schools Foundation for funding and trips.
A board member asked club leaders to clarify the distinction between "Hispanic" and "Latinx." One student explained that "Latinx" aims to include people of Spanish-language cultures across nations and to offer a gender-neutral alternative to masculine/feminine word endings in Spanish. The board thanked the students for their presentation and encouraged them to participate in the district multicultural night scheduled for May 20.
The presentation concluded with board praise for the students' volunteer work and a request that advisers be identified in meeting materials; an adviser who was present was thanked on the record. No board action was required.
