District seeks $241,000 from repair reserve to rebuild damaged water treatment plant

The IROQUOIS CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT asked the board to tap repair reserves to rebuild a water treatment plant damaged during an unusually cold winter.
Mr. Wolski told the board that extreme cold in January and February froze parts in the unheated plant, causing mechanical failures that left the system strained and in need of replacement. He said the district contacted three contractors, received two bids and identified a low bidder; equipment would come from Brentwood Industries’ Polychm line. The combined, not-to-exceed cost is roughly $241,000.
“We've had extreme cold temperatures…there's strain on the parts and in pieces; things are broken,” Mr. Wolski said, explaining why the district is seeking reserve access. He said the plant serves several campus buildings, including the transportation garage, high school and middle school, and that temporary heaters and multiple pumpouts were required to keep the system running over the winter.
Administrators submitted the work to New York State as an emergency project and said they expect to receive building aid at about 71 percent of eligible costs. The district has also contacted its insurance company but said any recovery from insurance is uncertain. Mr. Wolski asked the board to close the 2012 repair reserve (noted in the presentation as holding about $232,000) and use the 2023 reserve and general-fund balances to cover any remaining local share.
Board members and the meeting thanked Jim and his crew for round-the-clock work maintaining the system during the freeze. No formal vote to access the reserve was recorded at the hearing; the administration said an action item to access the repair reserve would appear later in the meeting agenda.
The administration said the work would be completed during the summer and that any final local share would remain manageable within the district’s budget planning.
The board is scheduled to consider the repair-reserve access formally later on the agenda; until the board takes that action, the request remains a proposal rather than an approved expenditure.
