Henrico schools honored for music, names Teacher Scholars and Teacher of the Year; district sets graduation dates

Henrico County Public Schools opened its monthly board meeting with student recognitions, a performance by Fairfield Middle School’s show choir and several district honors. Christopher Mosley, HCPS education specialist for performing arts, introduced the Fairfield Middle School show choir "Opulence," which performed selections the district provided as a highlight of student achievement.
Dr. Leslie Hughes, identified in the meeting as HCPS chief learning officer, announced that the division has been recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAM) for the 27th consecutive year as a Best Community for Music Education. Hughes said selection criteria include student demographics, teacher qualifications, participation rates and music facilities and credited HCPS music educators for sustained program excellence.
Kenya Jackson, the district's talent acquisition ambassador, introduced this year’s Teacher Scholars program recipients. Jackson described the Teacher Scholars Program (started in 2015) as a "grow your own" recruitment pathway: selected high-school students receive offers contingent on completing an accredited college teaching program and earning a teaching license, after which they are asked to return to HCPS for a three-year commitment. Jackson said 12 students were named as 2026 Teacher Scholars and noted that 21 former scholars are currently employed in district schools.
The board also viewed a classroom highlight featuring Jordan Satderfield, the district’s 2026 Teacher of the Year, whose students described her classroom as welcoming and high-expectation. Board members noted that Satderfield is a quarterfinalist for the Grammy Music Educator Award.
Finally, Dr. Boyd and district staff announced the graduation schedule for May 27–29, with nearly 3,800 seniors expected to receive diplomas at the Henrico Sports and Event Center; ceremonies will be livestreamed for those without tickets.
The meeting then moved into the public forum and regular consent business.
