Berwick Area SD board tables East Berwick playground vote after questions on fencing and site costs

The Berwick Area School District board voted to table a proposed playground installation at East Berwick after several board members said they needed complete site and fencing cost estimates before approving equipment purchases.

Public commenters urged the board to move forward. "This is something that could be so positive for these students," Leah Winsky said in support. Miranda Costa Hall, identifying herself as a member of the parent group, told the board parents are routinely asked to buy playground items and urged action.

Estapek Township resident Elizabeth Fry asked the board to delay a vote until it had details about land preparation, fence relocation and installation costs, saying she had expected the item to be tabled until those details were available.

Board discussion centered on whether to approve purchase of equipment without knowing whether site work would exceed bid thresholds, how diagonal or full-block fencing would change costs, and whether existing chain-link could be reused. Mr. Core noted tentative scheduling from the vendor for an Aug. 15 installation if the board approved the purchase and provided direction.

At the board table several members said they preferred a full project quote that included site work, fence options and installation before committing district funds. The chair called for a motion to table; a majority voted to table the item pending the requested full project pricing and scope.

The board did not adopt any changes to fencing or award a contract; members asked staff to obtain detailed quotes and return the item for reconsideration. The board also discussed balancing playground work across other buildings and the district's broader capital priorities.
