Council authorizes ODOT Safe Routes to School travel-plan application

Council authorized staff to submit an application to the Ohio Department of Transportation under the Safe Routes to School program to secure travel-plan development assistance.
City Manager Dave Kennedy said the program has the state hire a consultant to develop a school travel plan, which is often a prerequisite for later construction funding. "They basically would hire the consultant, pay for the consultant out of the funds," Kennedy said. Councilmember Hamlin, who said she is a Claremont-side resident and has walked the routes, praised the application and asked that maps emphasize connectivity to schools and parks.
Council adopted the resolution by unanimous roll call. If funded, staff said the consultant-prepared plan would allow the city to pursue pedestrian construction projects already on the capital list.
