Coffey County waives landfill fees for two residents rebuilding garages after demolition and fire

The Coffey County Commission on Feb. 23 approved two motions to waive landfill fees related to rebuilding efforts at private property.
Staff member Lindsay described a Reamer’s Point property where Tom and Michelle (as recorded in the meeting material) plan to self-demolish an old structure and replace it with a 30-by-30 metal garage; commissioners voted to waive landfill fees for that rebuild.
Lindsay also briefed the commission on a garage fire that destroyed contents and vehicles belonging to David and Virginia Medford. She said the Medfords have some insurance but staff did not yet know whether the landfill fee or contractor bids would be fully covered. “I have their policy. It doesn't really look like it covers much… I do have their policy and it does have some… but I don't know that it covers everything,” Lindsay said. Commissioners approved waiving landfill fees for the Medfords’ rebuild and asked staff to coordinate with the landfill and the family to provide documentation for insurance and any reimbursements.
Both motions passed by voice vote; the waivers are administrative approvals to relieve out-of-pocket landfill costs for demolition materials associated with the two rebuilding projects.
