Sheriff reports two ICE transfers in 2025; community raises courthouse pickup concerns at Truth Act forum

Kings County held its annual Truth Act public forum on April 28 as required under state law to disclose interactions between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.

Jazelle Koy of county administration summarized the forum’s purpose under AB 2792. Assistant Sheriff Travis Day reported the sheriff’s office facilitated two transfers to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during calendar year 2025; the department recorded 49 ICE access requests to detention facilities during the reporting period. Day said both transfers complied with the legal standards in Government Code section 7282.5 and relevant Penal Code sections (as cited in his report) for individuals who met statutory criteria for transfer to federal custody.

Members of the public and local advocates asked whether ICE activity included courthouse pickups or arrests made before individuals could complete court appearances. Day clarified the two transfers he reported originated from county jail custody rather than courthouse pickups; community representatives said they had verified reports of courthouse or workplace immigration encounters and asked for continued transparency and public reporting.

The Truth Act forum is an annual public disclosure requirement; no board action was required. County staff said the sheriff’s office submitted required data to the state Department of Justice and will continue to make records available with appropriate redactions where permitted by law.
