Harrisburg City Council unanimously approved three grant authorizations aimed at streets and parks.
Resolution 41 authorizes a grant application to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program for up to $4.3 million to fund multimodal safety improvements on Division Street from Second to 7th Street. City engineer Joel Sers said the project would fund design and construction of pedestrian and bicycle safety features — dedicated bike lanes, raised crosswalks and raised intersections — and that the city would need to provide a roughly 20% local match (about $1.2 million) if awarded.
Council also approved Resolution 42, a $250,000 DCED Greenways, Trails and Recreation grant application in partnership with the Capital Area Green Belt Association to restore and enhance safety, lighting and access on the Green Belt in South Harrisburg, and Resolution 43, a separate $250,000 DCED application to redesign Vernon Street Park in South Allison Hill with ADA access, upgraded playground equipment, lighting and multi‑use spaces. Staff and applicants noted matching funds and existing grants that will be leveraged; deadlines for the DCED applications were noted at the meeting.
All three measures passed by unanimous votes (6–0). Council members said they welcome the funding opportunities and encouraged continued community engagement during design.
