Commissioner Matt Shaldy votes no on Board of Health reappointment, cites COVID response

Commissioner Matt Shaldy recorded the sole no vote on the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners' reappointment of Jacqueline Miller, DDS, to the Lincoln-Lancaster County Board of Health at the March 24 meeting.
A motion to reappoint Miller for a term running April 15, 2025, through April 15, 2029, was moved and seconded and carried on a roll call that recorded Flaherty yes, Shaldy no, Vest yes and Yoakum yes. In explaining his vote, Shaldy said he would "not re-vote to reappoint someone to the County Board of Health as part of the disastrous response to COVID that led to lockdowns that far exceeded the state recommendations, led to fear and economic upheaval." The comment was his stated reason for opposing the appointment; no other commissioner challenged that rationale during the meeting.
The board approved the reappointment despite the dissent. The meeting record does not show testimony or public comment either supporting or opposing Miller's reappointment at the hearing. The board proceeded to other business, including another advisory-board appointment and several procurement approvals.
The next regular meeting of the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners is scheduled for March 31, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
