Policy committee tables communicable-disease rule, outlines wellness and policy-review next steps

On May 12 the Oxford Area School District Policy Committee continued its review of the 5000-series student policies and identified items that require medical or committee input before final board action.
Committee members reviewed policy 5600 (student health examinations) and policy 5610 (administration of medication) with no substantive objections. For policy 5605 (communicable diseases and immunizations), a board member asked that the document be reviewed by a medical professional. The committee agreed to send 5605 to the school physician for review between meetings and table the policy pending that input.
Members also discussed policy 5620, the district-wide wellness policy. Administrative staff noted changes to state regulations that took effect in January 2026 and said the district will need to reconvene the wellness committee and incorporate required changes by 2027. Board members discussed how and when the wellness-committee recommendations and the administrative procedures will be brought back to the policy committee and ultimately to the full board.
The committee requested the administration and the policy committee staff develop criteria for triggering an off-cycle or expedited review of new and significantly revised policies (for example, an AI policy that may need faster examination than the three-year cycle). The committee set a plan to revisit tabling and revisions at its June meeting.
Next steps: 5605 will be reviewed by the school physician and returned to the policy committee in June; the wellness committee will be reconvened to address regulation-driven updates ahead of the January 2027 implementation deadline.
