The Oxford Area School District finance committee on May 12 reviewed the 2026-27 homestead and farmstead property-tax reduction allocation, reporting roughly $2.7 million in gaming-related revenue that the district distributes to qualifying property owners.
A staff presenter told the committee that the payment "passes directly through to taxpayers" and described the countyverification process for homestead and farmstead status, which determines who receives the allocation. The presenter said roughly 20 new properties qualified as homesteads this year, which slightly reduced the per-household share; the presenter summarized the result as "about $475 per household." The presenter said some properties qualify for both homestead and farmstead and can receive both reductions.
Committee members asked how the allocation amount is calculated; the presenter said the total is set at the state level and noted the revenue source is gaming-related, including a growth in online gaming that helped produce the recent increase. "They have a formula," the presenter said, "probably not as intricate as this," referring to the districtlevel parcel apportionment used to divide the allotment across qualifying parcels.
The presenter explained that the county works to identify new homes and owner-occupied properties that qualify and also to remove ineligible parcels. The district then applies a formula to allocate the fixed state payment across qualifying parcels so that small parcels do not produce negative tax adjustments.
Next steps: the presenter said the homestead/farmstead allocation recommendation will appear on the board agenda at the next Tuesday meeting for formal approval. If approved there, the distribution will be applied for the 2026-27 tax year.
