The Charleston City Committee on Ways and Means approved a request to submit a U.S. Department of Transportation Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant application seeking $4 million in federal funds with a $1 million city match.
During brief discussion, committee members asked about the scope and specific signal upgrades for parts of the city such as the Upper Peninsula area. Mr. Wallace described the proposed work as focused on low‑cost, high‑benefit safety improvements that can be implemented quickly: back plates on traffic signals, pedestrian signals at signalized intersections that lack them, ADA‑compliant crosswalks where feasible, midblock crossings and other visibility and signaling upgrades to reduce crashes and improve pedestrian safety.
City staff said the SS4A application is intended to fund the actual construction of these improvements rather than extensive engineering or design work, emphasizing faster turnaround projects.
The committee approved submission of the grant application by voice vote.
