Board sets June 4 status hearing as owner pledges sign removal, says asbestos report will be supplied

The Hammond City Board of Works set a status hearing for June 4, 2026, for the longtime-vacant property at 7247–49 Indianapolis Boulevard after hearing progress updates from the property’s representatives and city staff.
Scott Bornstein, counsel for L2 Equities, said the owner is completing renovation work and distinguishing outstanding items that are not part of the demolition citation. "We are moving forward renovating the space and going to be having a new tenant in there shortly," Bornstein said.
Owner representative Joe Jankowski told the board the general contractor will remove the old sign "prior to the end of the month" or in the first week of June and that he will make sure the asbestos removal report is forwarded to the environmental and building departments. "I'll copy you on it and we'll make sure that we get that taken care of in short order," Jankowski said.
A city building representative (identified in the record as Mr. Pollux) said the asbestos removal report still must be submitted to the environmental department and that the asbestos removal permit cannot be finalized until the department receives that documentation. Staff also noted the electrical meter remains outstanding pending NIPSCO scheduling.
City staff explained the demolition order remains on the building department’s books even as staff work with the owner to bring the property into compliance. To ensure steady progress, the board agreed to monitor the site at a short-interval status hearing. The board formally set the next status date for June 4, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
The board did not overrule the demolition order; staff said the order remains enforceable while they observe remediation efforts and documentation submissions. The next hearing will focus on confirmation of the asbestos documentation, sign removal, and the NIPSCO-related electrical update.
