Commissioners approve Cannon Memorial restoration contracts and a time capsule budget

DeKalb County commissioners approved a package of actions April 13 to move forward on rehabilitation of the Cannon Memorial, including contractor quotes and a time capsule purchase, as residents and volunteers seek to complete work ahead of July 4.
Commissioner Douly said the City Council had approved up to $40,000 to cover costs not covered by donations and that several donors had given verbal commitments, though checks were not yet in hand. The board considered three separate items: accepting Atlas’s quote for $29,773 to restore the cannon and its base (including creating a cavity for a time capsule); approving up to $1,300 for the time capsule kit and associated shipping; and approving $1,350 to Knox Decorative Painting for restoration/painting of the main plaque and surrounding fence.
Each item was moved, seconded and approved by the commission (motions recorded as passing three to zero). Commissioners emphasized they would continue fundraising efforts and that the council’s $40,000 backing would be available if donations do not fully cover costs. Staff will return with any remaining bids for a plaque on the back of the time capsule and with documentation as donations are collected.
The board recorded no public comments on the rehabilitation during the meeting.
