Wilson Group describes Hilton Head Island Airport expansion; phase two designs complete, start depends on county

"This is an expansion of the terminal here at Hilton Head," Brian and Travis of the Wilson Group said during a Beaufort County Reports segment at the airport, adding that the project provides "three gate actually four gates but three gates with new jetways." They said phase one is part of a multi-phase project and is not yet finished.
The reporters noted the project took many years to reach this point; the guests said it took about 15 years and "about three or four designs, some of which were done multiple times." The Wilson Group representatives said much of the design work sought to reflect Hilton Head Island's character: "a lot of it comes from just looking at the island and looking at the character of the island and trying to find design elements that are thematic and represent Hilton Head."
On the role the terminal plays for visitors and residents, the Wilson Group said an airport is the community's "front door" and the "first thing you see when you arrive" and the "last thing you see before you leave," which informed choices about materials and image.
Looking ahead, the representatives said phase two "will go into the existing terminal and renovate it and add a little bit to the front of it, and it will bring the whole facility so that it'll look like one." They added that while initial design work for phase two has been completed, when construction would begin "really depends on, you know, when the the airport and the county want to start." The segment did not specify funding sources, construction dates, or contract awards.
