Candidate Elliot Day outlines priorities; resident urges retaining oversight language in proposed industrial board ordinance

Two public commenters addressed the Lafourche Parish Council on May 12 during the designated public comment period.
Elliot Day, who identified himself as a candidate (he said he is ballot number 28 in the upcoming May 16 election), used his three minutes to outline priorities he would pursue if elected: addressing blight, supporting local businesses, rebuilding population to sustain commerce, and coordinating drainage partners and a comprehensive parish drainage plan that has not been updated since 2012. "I have 33 years of committed service to this parish," Day said, and asked for council support in advancing annual goals and public accountability.
Wendy Tibido spoke about proposed Ordinance No. 8 (amending Article 26, chapter 34 of the parish code related to special districts and the Industrial Development Board). Tibido said she supported one of the replacement paragraphs the ordinance would add but urged the council to keep the existing first paragraph because, she said, removing it would remove taxpayers’ voice and oversight of how millage funds are used. "If you keep both paragraphs, both sides get to have their voice heard," Tibido said, asking council members to retain language that preserves taxing districts’ oversight.
Chairman Oten thanked both speakers for their remarks; the council proceeded with the agenda and later considered Ordinance No. 8 as a proposed ordinance under Item H.
