Miss Davis and Mrs. Stevens told the Marion Community Schools board on May 12 that students from elementary through high school placed in Scholastic and regional art competitions and that an all-city art festival would run Friday and Saturday at district facilities.
Miss Davis noted the Scholastic competition draws tens of thousands of entries and highlighted eighth-graders and high-school winners who received honorable mentions, silver keys and gold keys. "We try to participate in this competition every year," she said, stressing that student submissions are extra work beyond class assignments.
Teachers named several student winners and finalists, explained that original pieces and virtual portfolios remain available online for families, and described how regional recognition included displays at museums and awards ceremonies. One student, Aaliyah Cruz, read a poem aloud to the board as part of the presentation.
The art show schedule announced at the meeting: Friday all day (through approximately 6 p.m. while the board is in the building) and Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.; teachers encouraged families and board members to attend performances by bands and choirs alongside the visual art displays.
Board members and the superintendent praised the students, and teachers requested community support for ongoing arts programming. No funding decisions were made at the meeting; the presentation served to recognize student work and promote the weekend festival.
