Parks staff outlines major events, maintenance priorities and new projects in Weatherford

A Parks & Recreation staff member gave the Weatherford Parks and Recreation Board a quarterly operations briefing, reviewing maintenance responsibilities, special-event attendance and a slate of capital projects the department will bring back for further review.

The presenter summarized the department’s duties, saying the team handles most city special events, facility maintenance for city-owned buildings and grounds upkeep. "We do all the events," the staff member said, noting the parks maintenance crew also serves as the events team. The presenter said the maintenance crew is "about 13, 14" people and that roughly 800 acres of city land are mowed each year, with about 600 acres contracted to outside vendors.

Why it matters: The report lays out near-term workload and capacity as the city ramps up large events and capital work. Staff pointed to recent and upcoming projects that will affect public use of parks and city facilities.

Key program details: the department manages Harris Park events, runs multiple adult and youth leagues and hosts tournaments at Hollow Lake Park. The staff member said fall adult softball had 34 teams and that tournaments bring visiting teams to the city. The department coordinates trout stockings with Texas Parks and Wildlife during winter months and called out a family-oriented stocking planned for April.

Events and crowd size: Staff said the Monster Dash Halloween event drew "over 9,000" attendees and that the annual tree-lighting event attracted about "6,500" people; the tree is sourced from Michigan and is roughly 55 feet tall. Jack O'Lantern Nights at Chandor/Shandor Gardens was described as a ticketed, sellout event due to parking constraints.

Facility work and safety upgrades: The department has completed or overseen several remodels, including recent work at fire stations and City Hall. Staff said new engine-exhaust systems were installed at fire stations to capture diesel fumes, a step the presenter connected to reducing cancer risks among firefighters. The department also completed generator maintenance and winterization work ahead of a forecast storm.

Capital projects: Staff said the city has acquired an office building two blocks south of old City Hall, removed asbestos down to studs, and will hire an architect to remodel it to house parks and permitting staff. Design work is underway for the Grama Skatepark (renderings to be presented at the next meeting) that would add a skate facility, new playground, expanded parking and basketball-court upgrades. The Love Street splash pad demo was said to be nearly finished and construction is underway, with future restroom and playground phases under consideration.

Contracts and revenue use: Updated user agreements with Weatherford Little League, the Soccer Association and the Youth Football Association will go to the next city council meeting; staff said fees collected under those agreements are restricted by contract for reinvestment in the specific facilities used by each group.

What’s next: staff said they will return with skatepark renderings at the next Parks Advisory Board meeting and that several projects will appear on upcoming city council agendas. The board set the next meeting for Thursday, April 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cherry Park Building, 300 South Alamo Street.
