Weatherford staff postpones proposed data‑center code changes; residents urge safeguards

City staff told the Weatherford Planning and Zoning Commission on Jan. 14 that a staff‑proposed amendment to the zoning code designed to tighten rules for data‑center uses — a matter that had been published in the newspaper — will not be considered at the meeting and has been postponed indefinitely.
"That item is not being brought forward," Scott McDonald, the planning director, said, adding that the measure was a code amendment (not an application for a specific data center) and that it would be republished when and if the item is brought back to the commission and council.
Members of the public who had expected the item asked questions and raised concerns. Tom Pace of Fox Road, speaking during the non‑agenda public‑comment period, said he supports growth but urged the city to plan for community impacts if data‑center proposals return, citing worries about "water issues, power issues, noise issues" and urging proactive conversations with residents.
McDonald offered to speak with concerned residents after the meeting and reiterated that the item had been published in accordance with state law; he said staff would republish notices if and when the amendment returns to the agenda.
The staff announcement and public comments did not trigger formal action at the meeting; commissioners and staff acknowledged public input and noted that any future action would be republished and considered by both planning and city council.
