Slate Architecture principal Seth Varty explained the alternates: Alternate 1 replaces failing wood windows in the courthouse copper dome with longer-lasting fiberglass windows and improved seals to prevent interior leakage; Alternate 2 adds thin-brick veneer to the elevator penthouse so the structure better matches the historic brick exterior. "Fiberglass shouldn't have to be maintained very much and should provide a very long life for those windows," Varty said.
The commissioners approved the award by motion, attaching a condition that TCS accept a two-year county payment schedule (half of the cost in this fiscal year and half next year) to accommodate the county’s budgeting constraints. The chair said county staff would send a formal acceptance letter and ask the contractor to confirm the payment arrangement. The board recorded the total contract figure with alternates at approximately $474,000.
