Council splits on several small grants; Changemaker Summit approved, Compassion Week and other requests stall

At its May 12 meeting the Los Altos City Council considered multiple nonprofit grant requests beyond the evening’s longer deliberations.
The council approved a $10,000 grant to the Los Altos Mountain View Community Foundation (LAMVCF) to support its Changemaker Summit, with councilors praising the event’s practical training for local nonprofit leaders. Vice Mayor Lang moved the funding and the motion passed 3–1 with Council member Weinberg recorded in opposition.
A separate request from Compassion Week for $5,500 generated discussion about the city’s in‑kind support (facility use and staff volunteer participation) and whether additional city funding was necessary; the motion failed on a tie vote. Live Oak Adult Day Services and Love Twice both had no representatives present to answer questions, and no council motions were made on those items during the meeting.
Why it matters: The votes show the council distinguishing between programs it views as high‑leverage community capacity building (the Changemaker Summit) and those where members question the marginal benefit of cash grants given existing city in‑kind support. Applicants were encouraged to return with clarifications or to pursue alternate funding sources.
