Students preview Dragon Day and highlight athletics achievements at board meeting

"All the profits from the 5K go towards next year's Dragon Day operations and senior athletic scholarships," one student said, describing the fundraising model. Students outlined activities run by varsity teams (examples: football obstacle course, mini-volleyball with volunteer Annette, soccer/softball skill stations), vendor participation from area businesses, and family-friendly additions such as a water-balloon game and a clothing-drive called "Deposit Your Closet." Students said they will publicize the drive on social media.
Athletics update: Mr. Simo, who gave the departmental update that followed, reported roughly 29 programs across fall, winter and spring seasons and participation figures of about 432 athletes in the fall (roughly 31% of grades 7–12) and about 539 in spring (about 40% of the student population). He said the department runs nearly 930—950 contests annually and has focused on increasing girls' participation (reported at about 43% female participation).
Individual honors: The board recognized several team and individual accomplishments. Simo noted the boys soccer team's trip to the state championship, Brett Zimmer's All-State and All-American honors, and the girls basketball program's Section 9 championship and first-team selections. The administration recognized Devon Rothman as the 2026 NYSPHSAA 100-yard backstroke champion; Simo said Rothman will continue his swim career at Drexel University and praised his leadership with younger swimmers.
Why it matters: Dragon Day is student-run and positioned as both a community outreach and a student-leadership development event; proceeds support scholarships and program continuity. The athletics update also illustrated the department's reach across the district and its emphasis on scholar-athlete recognition and youth development.
