Board forms tree-standards subcommittee, reviews trail outreach and senior-center survey; staff previews pool, camps and Keller Light Show upgrades

Board members discussed several community-facing items that range from trees and trails to programs and events.
A new "tree standards and memorials" subcommittee was announced, led by Tom with Ashley volunteering; the group will focus on species selection and placement, not hazard-tree removal. Members noted examples of improper planting (burlap and wire left on root balls) and that warranty replacement is available if newly planted trees fail within the warranty period.
Trail-subcommittee members pressed for improved trail wayfinding and emergency dispatch correlation. One member suggested using interactive city tools or apps to mark waypoints for dispatch; another recommended posting a detailed Sports Park map on Keller Connect. The committee also proposed distributing trail maps and safety materials at Summer Nights and other outreach events.
Staff reported the senior-center survey results are posted on the city's website and flyers with QR codes are available; there was no mass email distribution. Early priorities from the survey include restoring popular fitness offerings (balance classes and chair yoga with instructors) and tracking room utilization closely to identify underused time slots.
On programming and events, Michael (parks staff) said the outdoor pool opens Memorial Day weekend, summer camp season begins the week of June 1 and ten weeks of camps sold out rapidly. Cody said council provided extra funding to expand the Keller Light Show for the nation's 250th birthday, adding five minutes of fireworks, a drone show and Emerald City as the headline band, plus family activities and free face painting to reduce lines.
Board members asked staff to coordinate outreach materials, confirm subcommittee scope and report back with implementation details in July.
