Marina: appearance vs major work Commissioners acknowledged most marina repairs (dredging and piling replacement) require specialized contractors and permitting and are funded or pending FEMA/other sources. Several asked whether interim, low-cost surface-level improvements (lifting leaning posts, temporary visual cleanups) or a short-term outsourced contractor for seasonal maintenance could improve public perception and event readiness while the major work proceeds. The commission asked staff to coordinate with relevant agencies, update the city website and post regular social-media status updates so the public better understands the project timeline and constraints.
Civic center: deferred maintenance and grant strategy Commissioners agreed the civic center is under-marketed and noted deferred-maintenance items (patches under stage panels, HVAC concerns, occasional ceiling repairs). They recommended staff pursue historic-preservation grant opportunities and legislative appropriations where appropriate but emphasized completing basic deferred maintenance first so grant requests are competitive.
Botanical garden: phased, sponsor-led approach A commissioner advocated advancing a botanical-garden concept adjacent to the museum that would start with sidewalks and benches supported by CRA funds and nonprofit partners, then attract sponsorship to fund future improvements and potentially an admission or membership model. Commissioners supported the concept provided the city's initial funding commitment is limited and community partners provide seed funding and maintenance plans.
Next steps: Staff was tasked with (1) assessing small, safety-compliant appearance improvements for the marina and reporting funding options; (2) compiling deferred-maintenance items for the civic center and evaluating grant-readiness; and (3) coordinating with CRA and nonprofit partners on sidewalk/initial infrastructure steps for the botanical-garden concept.
