District dashboard: families report strong connection; students want less screen time and improved facilities

Yucaipa‑Calimesa district staff presented local dashboard indicators and survey results June 18, reporting generally positive family engagement ratings alongside recurring student concerns about screen time, behavior and facilities.

Mr. Kirkland, presenting the district’s local indicators, said the district rated itself at about 3.6 overall in content‑area implementation on a 1–5 scale and highlighted areas of strength in basic school conditions (no findings for teacher misassignments or missing curriculum materials). He summarized family survey results as strongly positive — "95% or above" in several family connection metrics — and said about 300 families and roughly 650 students completed the surveys.

Student themes varied by level: elementary responses emphasized social‑emotional skills and requests for improved facilities and meal choices; middle and high school students reported wanting less screen time in class, stronger discipline for problem behaviors and more engaging, collaborative classroom activities. Middle school respondents also raised cell phone policy and dress code as recurring topics.

The presenter said the surveys inform local site planning and that staff will use the dashboard results to prioritize professional learning, instructional materials and student engagement efforts. Board members asked how surveys are administered; the presenter said teachers push an electronic survey to students at the sites.

No formal action was taken on the dashboard presentation; the report will inform district planning and the next school year’s priorities.
