Competitive Edge Charter Academy board approves LCAP, funds interventions

The Competitive Edge Charter Academy board voted unanimously June 18 to approve the school’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), accepting a multi‑year framework that ties 13 actions and 31 progress metrics to four broad goals.

A school presenter identified in the record as “Mr. Me” reviewed the plan, saying it allocates $547,000 targeted at low‑income students, English learners and foster youth and designates roughly 36% of that amount to the first goal on English language arts and English learner progress. The presenter described specific investments: a full‑time intervention (tier‑three) specialist, a teacher on assignment focused on instruction rather than discipline, an expanded librarian role tied to research and reading supports, and professional development for certificated and classified staff.

“Her job has really changed over the last couple years — she’s our tier‑three specialist for reading,” the presenter said of the intervention specialist, describing work with teachers and parent education nights. The plan also funds an expanded counselor budget and supports to strengthen family engagement and transition programs for fifth‑to‑sixth grade students.

Board members praised the school’s staff and community engagement. Board member Bob Miller said the school’s discipline data and outreach indicated the approach is working and thanked staff for their efforts. After a brief discussion, Board member Debbie Miller moved to approve the LCAP; Bob Miller seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

The board approved the LCAP as the district begins a new three‑year cycle and will use the plan’s metrics — including STAR/ELA, PSAT 8/9 participation, CAST science and ELPI results — to monitor progress.

The board adjourned the Competitive Edge portion of the meeting after approving the LCAP and addressing other agenda items.
