Several members of the public used the Jan. 15 board meeting to press the Sequoia Union High School District for accountability on personnel and program matters.
Jeremy Aray, speaking remotely, told the board it has been six months without updates on the removal of "Coach Mo" from the classroom and alleged that Human Resources has been used to target whistleblowers, enabling a culture of harassment, racial discrimination and retaliation. Aray named district leadership in his critique and urged the community to document and share concerns so the district cannot "avoid it." The board received the comment; no substantive staff response was provided in the meeting record.
A parent identified as Kit Waffle raised a Williams Act concern tied to agenda item 12.5, saying she filed a Williams complaint alleging teacher misassignment and insufficient instructional materials for her son in the Stars therapeutic program. Waffle said a teacher listed as the teacher-of-record lacked an active California credential for the first month of the school year and that substitute coverage included teachers whose special-education credentials had expired. She reported that Stars students had not received board‑approved math textbooks and that instructional content was often worksheets or grade‑inappropriate materials. Waffle said her complaint had been acknowledged by school and district staff only recently and asked the board to review hiring practices and instructional-materials provision for the Stars program.
Representatives of the Sequoia Education District Teachers Association also spoke during the meeting. An SDTA speaker (identified in the record as Lexi prto and, in another online comment, as Lexi Fredo) thanked staff for a district policy bulletin on protecting student rights in immigration‑related matters and described a new BIPOC mentorship and retention cohort launched with CTA support to retain and support BIPOC educators.
The board chair reminded speakers that the board generally does not act on non‑agendized items during public comment but will refer issues to staff for investigation. The Williams complaint and the public allegations about HR and personnel practice were recorded on the meeting record; the board voted later in the meeting on the consent agenda (which included adoption of consent items) but did not take immediate substantive action in public session on the allegations themselves.
Trustees and staff did not dispute the factual content of the public comments during the meeting; they directed that matters raised in public comment be referred to staff for follow‑up consistent with board policy.
