Monterey city manager signs off after nearly three decades; Lou Bowman to serve as interim

The city manager used the program to announce that this edition was his last "Mornings with the Manager," saying he began in June 1997 and has valued his time serving Monterey. "I started in 1997 in June... this is my last mornings with the manager," he said.
He said the city council has begun candidate interviews to fill the position and that the council will conduct additional interviews in early January before making an appointment. He named Lou Bowman as the interim city manager and said Bowman will start Jan. 1 and likely serve for two to three months. "Lou Bowman will be the interim city manager. He will start on January 1st... starting January Lou will be here as an interim for maybe 2 months or 3 months," the manager said.
The manager reflected on community partnerships, thanked volunteers and employees, and shared light anecdotes from his tenure, including an account of a jeweler playing a trumpet during public comments and a German exchange student's remark about the pledge of allegiance.
He closed by thanking residents and staff and wishing the city well; the council has not yet announced a permanent successor and will continue its interview process in January.
