Commission approves Gateway Infrastructure agreements to bring fiber to West Fargo

The West Fargo City Commission approved right‑of‑way and construction agreements with Gateway Infrastructure LLC (Gateway Fiber), clearing the way for the company to install fiber‑optic infrastructure in the city.

Derek Clifford, head of government affairs for Gateway Fiber Nationwide, told the commission the company is already building in nearby markets and intends to begin construction in West Fargo with a phased permitting approach. Clifford described Gateway as a customer‑focused company and summarized service speeds and pricing used in other markets.

Dan Hansen said staff had vetted the agreements and that Gateway’s packet had been reviewed and modified by the city attorney. Under the right‑of‑way agreement Gateway will pay a 4% fee on installed infrastructure, consistent with franchise/right‑of‑way fees used in other agreements. Staff said Gateway would start work on up to three sites under initial permits, with additional permits issued as sites are completed and restoration and performance standards are met.

Commissioners asked about construction schedules, restoration and inspection. Staff said the commission previously approved a consultant contract to provide construction inspection resources for fiber projects and that the city will work with Gateway on site layouts, permitting and neighborhood notice. The commission approved the agreements by voice vote.

What happens next: Gateway and city right‑of‑way staff will coordinate site planning, permitting and initial construction; staff will oversee inspection and require restoration standards and customer notification protocols.
