Montclair outlines holiday assistance, a $61,000 STEP grant and fall community events

City staff told the Montclair City Council that the holiday food and toy basket program will accept applications during the first week of November, with final recipient counts expected in mid-November.
A public commenter said roughly 550 people signed up last year and asked whether demand has increased; staff replied applications and in-person review allow consideration of families near the eligibility cutoff (based on federal poverty guidelines) and that exceptions may be made for recent emergencies.
Human Services announced key dates: appointment-based applications must be scheduled by Thursday, Oct. 17; donation drop-off at the recreation center will be accepted through Dec. 13; the citys monthly food distributions are set for Oct. 17 (community center) and Oct. 23 (Feeding America pantry at the recreation center).
"Eligible applicants must live in Montclair and meet specific income guidelines," Marsha of Human Services told the council, adding that families with children in Montclair elementary and middle schools should contact their school offices for program details.
Public commenters and council members also highlighted other community supports and events. Xavier Mendes praised a new illuminated city sign and the Montclair Community Foundations turkey-and-toy giveaways. He and staff noted the city or a local recipient received a $61,000 grant to support the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) that funds targeted enforcement and safety efforts.
City communications outlined a wider fall calendar: a city health fair on Oct. 10 offering free health screenings and vaccines; a 2024 candidates forum to be held Oct. 16 in council chambers (to be streamed and posted on the city YouTube channel); an after-school program celebration; ribbon cuttings on Oct. 10 and Oct. 17; and a Halloween Spooktacular at Montclair Place on Oct. 26.
The announcements emphasized that many programs and distributions are subject to availability and date-specific appointment windows.
The council proceeded to other business and later recessed to closed session.
