Lapeer commission opposes state preemption housing bills and urges kratom ban

The commission voted to adopt the resolution and authorized staff to forward it to the city’s state representatives and senator.
Separately, the commission unanimously adopted a resolution urging approval of House Bill 5537 to ban kratom, citing concerns about its availability at gas stations and youth access. Commissioners discussed the substance and age‑restriction questions; staff noted current state law does not provide age limits for kratom sales.
