Burr Ridge honors retiring Police Chief John Madden and names Mark Loftus as new chief

The Burr Ridge Village Board on Aug. 26 unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing Police Chief John Madden’s 34‑year career and approved the appointment of Deputy Chief Mark Loftus as the village’s new police chief.
The mayor read the resolution that traces Madden’s career from patrol officer in 1989 through promotions to corporal, detective and chief in 2009, and lists professional milestones including accreditation achievements, technology upgrades and regional leadership roles. The resolution names the police department’s training room the “John Madden Training Center” and waives the retiree portion of village health insurance through Sept. 30, 2026.
Chief John Madden, who retired Aug. 24, thanked trustees, family and department staff. “I’m just happy as hell,” Madden said, adding that he was pleased to leave the department “in great hands.” Deputy Chief Mark Loftus, appointed by mayoral nomination and approved by the board, said he appreciates the board’s confidence after 26 years with the department and thanked his family and colleagues.
Trustees and guests—including DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin—praised Madden’s leadership, citing his role in achieving and maintaining accreditation, moving the department into a new station and helping create a countywide investigative task force. The board’s actions were unanimous: the resolution was adopted and the appointment carried on voice/roll‑call votes recorded at the meeting.
The board scheduled a formal celebration for Sept. 18, when colleagues, family and department members will join a public event honoring Madden’s career.
