Stockton Unified trustees recognized Cleveland Elementary on Tuesday after district staff and a third-grade student described how AVID practices have shaped learning at the school.
Assistant Superintendent Casey Clappenbach introduced the recognition, and a third-grade student, Violet Strian N., described AVID classroom routines that she said give her "superpowers." Principal Heidi Mohamd Khan said the school also received a 2025 teacher advocacy award with a $10,000 prize announced during an AVID meeting; the board presented certificates to staff and students.
In other student-focused reports, senior Anthony Pimementel of the Health Careers Academy described his CTE pathways, 600-plus community-service hours and his acceptance to UC Merced. Trustees presented Pimementel with a certificate honoring his accomplishments.
District staff and seven students who attended the National Youth Leadership Conference in St. Paul, Minnesota, described workshops connecting service learning and leadership, intergenerational service projects at the Minnesota Museum of Science, and the value of student debriefing. Staff said the district intends to send six students and three chaperones next year under available allocations.
Trustees also applauded Edison High School—and—or a recent Carnegie Hall performance and noted counselors will receive RAM certification in July.
Board members said student recognitions and national experiences underscore Stockton Unified—fforts to expand hands-on learning, leadership opportunities and service learning across the district.
