Rebecca Zhang, a parent and Marysville Joint Unified graduate, said MCA "customized one academic journey" for students and asked trustees to "consider the long term impact of removing this program," arguing that dual-enrollment funding is separate and that a one-time grant awarded in 2023 runs through June 30, 2027.
Student organizer Adam Moore, identifying himself as a student representative of the Save MCA effort, said the group's petition had reached about 600 signatures and that the students had been organizing fliers, banners and radio outreach to preserve the program. "Currently we are at 600 signatures," Moore said, and described cancelled outreach events that organizers hoped to reschedule pending the board's decision.
The teachers' union president, Angela Stiegel, raised broader budget concerns earlier in the meeting, asking whether the district's reported plan to cut $3.7 million would be concentrated in reductions in force or distributed across other savings; she asked the board for clarification on the distribution of cuts.
What happens next: The board reviewed MCA's mid-year LCAP dashboard presented later in the meeting and will address budget reductions on a future agenda; no closure or final decision on MCA was taken on Feb. 11.
