University reports emissions cuts, four campuses achieve STARS gold; Morris reaches 100% renewable electricity

Shane Stennes, Chief Sustainability Officer, told the Finance and Operations Committee on April 26 that the University has translated climate commitments into measurable operational progress and campus-level action plans. "Since 2020, we have decreased emissions from campus by more than 80,000 tons of pollution," he said, and described climate action plans developed for each campus that set emissions-reduction targets over the next 10–15 years.
Stennes said external assessments show strong academic performance and improving operations: the University ranks in the top 10% on the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings and four of five campuses have earned STARS gold ratings; Rochester achieved a silver rating on its first submission. He noted that academic/teaching measures tend to score higher while operations (energy, procurement, transportation) present the greatest opportunities for improved performance.
The presentation highlighted campus projects: Crookston will plant more than 800 trees as part of windbreak restoration with a State of Minnesota grant covering 95% of the cost; Duluth completed an energy-efficient renovation of its main kitchen following state sustainable-building guidelines; Morris operates two wind turbines and more than 500 kW of solar and is piloting thermal energy storage as part of a partnership with Grid Catalyst; Twin Cities Waste Recovery Services achieved more than 90% recycling or composting at Farm Aid and a home football game.
Regents asked how the University is communicating and demonstrating these achievements. Regent Goldberg Luger asked how the system elevates sustainability to stakeholders and prospective students; Stennes pointed to faculty engagement, the Climate Adaptation Partnership extension programs, demonstration projects such as the AOC computing facility that captures waste heat, and planned tours for regional facilities managers.
On emerging technologies, Regent Huebsch raised the prospect of small modular nuclear reactors. Stennes said state law currently precludes development of new nuclear energy in Minnesota and that SMRs are at early stages of deployment, suggesting any campus adoption would first require legislative change and further techno-economic study.
Stennes concluded that the University is focusing in the coming year on implementing climate action plans, evaluating changes to external impact ratings, and returning recommended amendments to the Board’s 2004 sustainability and energy-efficiency policy in the fall. He also warned that staffing capacity is limited: achieving more ambitious targets such as zero waste or STARS platinum will require additional operational resources.
