Commissioners authorize president to extend private jail-settlement agreement

Don Cockerel told the Board on April 9 that the county’s private settlement agreement in pending jail litigation expires before the next meeting and that discussions with the Indiana division of the ACLU are ongoing. He asked the Board to grant the president authority to execute a short extension if it meets her standards.
"...since it expires before your next meeting, I would recommend and request that you authorize the president of the county commissioners to execute that if it meets her standards," Cockerel said. The Board moved to approve that authorization and took no public comment.
The motion passed unanimously, recorded as 3-0 in favor. The speaker noted the settlement had been extended through April 15, 2026 during discussion and said both the ACLU, the Monroe County Board of Commissioners and the Monroe County Sheriff would need to approve any extension. The Board did not discuss further substantive terms of the agreement on the record.
