The Bloomington Historic Preservation Commission on April 9 voted to continue two demolition notices — DD2603 for 1331 East Atwater and DD2604 for 326 South Eagles — directing staff to perform further research into historical significance and the feasibility of moving the houses.
For 1331 East Atwater, staff described a 1938 two‑story brick Colonial Revival with a pedimented portico and Doric columns that had been first owned by members of a Black‑owned lumber company; staff said the property is rated as "contributing." Staff recommended release of the demolition delay, but neighbors and commissioners urged further research. Resident Jenny Southern said the Atwater house is "a gorgeous house in very, very good condition," and noted it provides very affordable housing near campus — "it's $500 per bedroom," she said — and suggested exploring moving the building rather than demolition.
After questions about condition and survey rating, Commissioner Butler moved — and Commissioner Duffy seconded — to continue DD2603 so staff could research the property's historic rating, the family and cultural history, and whether relocation was feasible. The commission voted unanimously to continue and asked staff to prepare a formal report and place the property on the HPC calendar for consideration for local designation under BMC 8.08.01D.
The commission considered DD2604, a 1940s two‑story colonial revival at 326 South Eagles, in the same meeting. Neighbors again urged a broader block‑face review; staff recommended release but commissioners asked staff to check what is beneath the aluminum siding and explore whether the property merits local designation. Commissioner Baker moved to continue DD2604 for additional research; the motion carried unanimously and staff read formal review language requesting placement on the HPC agenda under BMC 8.08.01D.
Both continuances start formal staff study rather than authorizing demolition. Commissioners said they want more documentation of architectural and historical assets before releasing either property for demolition.
