Riley County approves emergency services job descriptions as consolidation moves forward

David Adams, EMS ambulance director and incoming Emergency Services director, updated the commission on the consolidation that the board approved December 4, explaining that personnel and operational duties are being transitioned to division and deputy chiefs and that job descriptions have been revised to reflect the change.
"On December 4th, you approved the consolidation of County Fire District number one, emergency management, 911 administration, and EMS to a single emergency services department," Adams said, outlining a timeline that targets reassignment of personnel on Aug. 1 and a resolution for adoption in June.
Adams and other staff described a flatter organizational chart in which division chiefs and deputy chiefs have more direct reporting lines to improve information flow and backup coverage. The job descriptions for Administrative Assistant No. 2, Division Chief of Fire and Deputy Chief of Fire were reviewed with input from the fire advisory board before being brought to the commission.
Commissioners moved and approved the position descriptions as presented. The vote was recorded in favor by all commissioners present. Adams said EMS position descriptions would be returned to the board in the near term for similar approval.
Next steps: staff will continue the personnel transition, complete remaining EMS position descriptions, and bring a resolution for formal adoption in the June meeting cycle.
