Board debate highlights coach stipends and limits of collective bargaining through 2027
Summary
Board members questioned disparities in supplemental coach stipends (noting cheerleading covers two seasons but pays less than other sports) while administration said stipend amounts are established by the collective-bargaining agreement and cannot be changed until contract negotiations conclude in August 2027.

Board members pressed administrators about the formula and fairness of supplemental coach stipends during a discussion of student-activities agenda items.
A board member said cheerleading appears underpaid relative to other athletic positions, noting cheer spans two seasons and asking why stipends do not reflect that workload. "It's gone this long where they've been paid that little, and everyone is on board with it. It's insane to me," the board member said.
District administrators and staff explained that supplemental salaries are set by the collective-bargaining agreement negotiated with the teachers' association: the stipend chart is created in negotiations, reviewed by both parties, and then ratified. The contract includes incremental increases and, as administrators stressed, does not allow changes to the stipend schedule until the contract is renegotiated; that contract runs through August 2027.
Administrators said that while the contract approach limits immediate changes, the district has previously adjusted terms during negotiations and that there will be an opportunity to revisit supplements when bargaining resumes. Board members acknowledged that grievance risk and contract terms constrain unilateral action.
No salary changes were approved at the meeting; the discussion served as a prelude to future contract negotiations and as context for budget planning.
