Commissioners flag budget overspending, reappointments and road-safety inquiry at July work session

At its July 24 work session the Unified Government of Cusseta–Chattahoochee County reviewed departmental updates and prepared multiple items for the August 6 regular meeting.

County Manager Thomas Weaver reported on recreation programming (including a back-to-school event), an animal-control concern about euthanasia costs, a repaired water main on Highway 280, and ongoing road maintenance and edge backfilling. Chairman Charles Coffey expressed concern about apparent overspending early in the fiscal year, urging departments to manage expenditures and submit outstanding invoices promptly so they are charged to the proper fiscal year.

The work session agreed to add several items to the Aug. 6 agenda, including budget amendments, reappointments of Walter Miller and Lou Beck to the Industrial Development Authority, and a 4‑H funding request pending additional information. The commission also discussed land-use scheduling: a conditional-use permit for 110 Stagecoach Drive was tabled to Aug. 6 because of pending litigation. Members reported contact with Rep. Sanford Bishop's office to seek action on safety improvements at the Highway 520 intersection following a recent crash; staff said the expected timeline for project work could run into the fall.

The work session entered executive session to discuss legal matters, personnel and litigation and reconvened later the same evening. The commission closed the session without recorded votes on closed matters and set the items above for future action on the Aug. 6 agenda.
